Ma Dengn to lead 50th anniversary celebrations

The Ma Dengn Association, organizers of the well acclaimed Ma Dengn Beach Festival 2009, is geared up to produce the highly anticipated 2nd annual festival on December 31st and January 1st 2010 at the Lumley Beach to build on what was described last year as an inspiring event. Ma Dengn Chairperson, Sinkarie Sesay disclosed that the two days exciting activities, the beach festival showcases breathtaking fashion, mouth watering cuisine, innovative arts and crafts, progressive literature and feet stomping traditional and contemporary music of Sierra Leone on a world class platform as the official kick off to the 50th Independence anniversary celebrations. “Ma Dengn” meaning ‘Let Us Come Together’ will make the 2010 Ma Dengn beach festival as one of most highly anticipated events of the year at the Lumley beach with the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop, revelers will experience what is destined to become the biggest festival in Sierra Leone.”

Sinkarie Sesay said that the Ma Dengn beach festival was launched in December 2009 as it hosted thousands of Sierra Leoneans, expatriates and the international community flocked the beach to celebrate and enjoy the culture of the country.

She further stated that they are partnering with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, National Tourist Board, Freetown City Council and the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency committed the support of their organizations to ensure the festival’s success noting, “First Lady, Madam Sia Koroma is the champion of this event starting 2010, the festival will appear on the official ECOWAS list of cultural events, opening it up to a wider regional and international audience. Join us as we celebrate our Salone Culture with arts and craft vendors; food vendors; fashion show; storytelling and live musical performances for Le 15,000 each day.”

Minister of Tourism, Hindolo Trye during the opening speech last year described the event as a unique platform for us to relish and develop Sierra Leone culture in a way which can be attractive to both domestic and international tourists.

First Lady Sia Koroma called the event as a true homegrown, civil society initiative and its organizers deserve applause for the sheer audacity and boldness of the vision and the will to see it through.

Chairman of the 50th Independence Anniversary Committee, Dr. William Conteh, said they are working collectively with Ma Dengn as all Sierra Leoneans are members of the committee as the Ma Dengn beach festival is the official kick off of the Independence Anniversary celebrations.  He maintained that the Committee appreciates the efforts of Ma Dengn.

Chairlady Lumley Beach Community, Mary Bangura acclaimed Ma Dengn for it works towards the development of the Lumley community.

Lumley youths and the elders assured the Association of their fullest cooperation in making the festival not only historic but also a success story.
