Street beggars multiply

We have observed that Sierra Leone is now experiencing a high increase in the rate of beggars, especially those on the streets, many of whom are abandoned kids.

Begging has become a way of life among many citizens of this nation which is rated as one of the poorest on planet earth.  And our tendency to beg is not just limited to the poor people; even top government functionaries have acculturated the habit of begging, especially from foreign investors who come to help this nation.

It is not unusual to see a top government official demanding fuel from a business magnate or asking the magnate to help him with the college fees of his or her youngest daughter.

What has made the matter worse is that some people, in the process of begging, resort to dirty tricks like gossiping their colleagues just for their request to be granted fast.

Our young ladies have also taken to civilized begging; just propose love to one and you will hear her requesting immediately for some cash to plait her hair or attend to her grandmother’s funeral.

As a press, we are perturbed by such a development which we believe is the obvious result of our laziness. We are pleading with our fellow citizens to work hard and stop too much begging.
