Sierra Leone boxers out of Commonwealth games

Sierra Leone boxers Mohamed Sillah and Abdul Rashid Bangura are out of the Commonwealth Boxing Contest after they were eliminated in the preliminary rounds. Sillah, who made it to ring Last Friday, was defeated by Daniel Lewis in the second round. So also was Bangura defeated in the very first rounds of his bout on Saturday. Our Reporter Mohamed Konneh is in Glasgow and now reports.

Report

Seven punches without a reply were enough to send Mohamed Sillah out of the ring and out of the Commonwealth Games last Friday evening. Thanks to the Algerian referee who stopped the fight as it could have been more. The bout was another setback for Sierra Leone at the ongoing games with the country’s contingent in the Judo and Squash teams already out of the competition.

The Sierra Leone fighter started well scoring nine as against ten points in the first round but could not progress further as he was already tired before the start of the second round.

Highly rated Abdul Bangura was next in line entering the ring on Saturday to take on Brody Blair of Canada. Bangura’s bout only lasted for three minutes and was already out of the games. The Canadian was bleeding on the upper eye after coming under early attack caught by Bangura’s elbow. The officiating referee was forced to stop the bout declaring Brody the winner even before the end of the first round. This was Bangura’s first ever fight at a Commonwealth Games and outside of Africa.

Losing on Saturday was the end of Sierra Leone’s participation in the boxing ring at the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games. The West African nation’s hope of progressing is far from reach with three out of the eight disciplines to the Commonwealth Games now out of the competition.

However, the country’s overseas based athletes are hoping to overturn the poor performance at the start when they take on the tracks in the next few days to come.

As it is, the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games have witnessed some fascinating performances, with Africa securing first gold medal in the women’s weightlifting category. Thanks to Nigerian Chika Amalaha who pulled a total of 196 points in snatch and clean and jerk in the 53kg class to clinch gold for Africa and Nigeria in this year’s games.
