NATCOM issues joint press release on commitment to telecommunication standards in Sierra Leone

February 21, 2015 – NATCOM and leading mobile phone companies agree to maintain Sierra Leone mobile network services at International Telecommunications Union Standards

Following a meeting with the newly appointed NATCOM chairman Momoh Konte, NATCOM director general Mohamed Bangura, and two leading mobile operators, Airtel and Africell, this joint release was issued to confirm their strong commitment to maintain mobile network services in Sierra Leone at International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Standards.

The NATCOM chairman emphasized the importance and need for quality mobile network services all over the country, especially rural coverage and the expansion of 3G data services as this will accelerate the socio-economic development of the country.

In response to the call of the NATCOM chairman, the management of Africell and Airtel reiterated their companies’ commitments to delivering ITU standard quality of service and to continue the expansion and modernization of their mobile voice and data network all over the country.  Both operators shared detain ls of their projects already under implementation to achieve these objectives.

NATCOM and the operators agreed to closely monitor key network quality indicators in line with ITU standards over the next 45 days and any necessary improvement will be made to comply with the said standard.

NATCOM as regulator will ensure the quality of service parameters are met with strict regular monitoring and will share the relevant performance level of operators with the public as is practiced in many other countries.

The NATCOM chairman, Mr. Momoh Konte, expressed his delight over the commitment and collaborative response from Airtel and Africell to build and deliver ITU quality standard mobile voice and data network services to the people of Sierra Leone; Mr. Konte re-emphasized his personal commitment towards a new era of telecommunication services in Sierra Leone.
