SLPP, the stones, the bottles and the police

It is now crystal clear that the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has become notoriously violent with party youths misbehaving with impunity. Stones, bottles, sticks and other dangerous light weapons now form part of SLPP meetings which usually attract a large number of OSD police officers. Whenever the SLPP holds a meeting, the police officers suffer serious work on that day.

It is now becoming almost impossible for the SLPP to hold meetings without a large contingent of armed police officers. Our peacemakers have become warmongers. Without the presence of the police at the office past Monday, one of the party’s flag bearer aspirants Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella would have now been in hospital for treatment of his burst head. Kandeh would definitely not have escaped the volleys of stones and bottles rained on the office by apparently lawless SLPP youths suspected to be fanatics of Julius Maada Paopa Bio.

In fact, there is now the manifested need for a garrison of heavily armed military and OSD police personnel to be permanently deployed at that office which as it has become another war front.

It appears the SLPP has been politically bewitched to remain in an eternal state of disarray and violence. With such a widely divided and violent main opposition party, our young democracy is in jeopardy. The party’s flag bearers and other elders are also in danger as any of them can be at the receiving end of stones and bottles at anytime.

The once popularly peaceful party has unfortunately become a notoriously hawkish party. Sir Milton Margai, Bai Farma Tass and other founding members may be weeping in their graves.

Woe betides any flag bearer aspirant to hold a meeting in that party office without the police, that aspirant will end up running to the hospital to treat wounds. So is the SLPP today. What a big shame on a party that boasts of being overloaded with intellectuals; a big shame on a party that pioneered democracy in this republic; a big shame on a party that carries a motto of unity, One Country, One People.
