Leone Stars draw brings mixed feelings amongst fans
Sierra Leone played out a goalless draw with Ivory Coast the reigning African Champions at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Leone Stars are being tipped by many to finish bottom of Group I because of the football crisis at home.
Ghanaian coach, Sellas Tetteh’s side headed into their qualifying Group I match day 2 with very low winning statistics, but they had to settle for a surprising goalless draw.
Following the draw, Sierra Leone fans took to social media to have their say on the performance against the Ivory Coast.
Some Sierra Leoneans believe there are other issues to be resolved for the team to do well as Sheku Kamara writes on Facebook “There are too many negative factors contributing to the impediment in Sierra Leone domestic soccer league.
“And until those negative factors are carefully examined and addressed, – Sierra Leone national soccer team will only continue to draw and lose matches in major soccer tournaments in Africa and abroad.”
Brima Kargbo suggested that “The team needs the support from back home and the FA must work alongside the sports ministry. The backing Leone Stars get from the authorities generates energy, unity and strength in the camp and that transmitted directly into the players.”
“The result will help restores confidence and strengthened the squad resilient ahead of the coming matches in the group — a job was well done by the team for helping each other,” Mamoud Kabba in Freetown noted.
“Good we take a point, to say the least, but until we start winning matches and a well-organised League in Freetown our national team will always struggle,” Sallieu Kamara
Lamrana Barrie posted, “This is not a result that we should be glad for, and Look at what Liberia did Tunisia.”
Tom Sesay: “Am not going over the moon, football is not back yet for Sierra Leone until our house is in order. I cannot help or be slightly underwhelmed with a draw which is always our best result.
Meanwhile, Hassan Mila Sesay, who trade his football with FC Lahti in the Finnish Premier Veikkausliiga division has said his national teammate reputation, has soared since Sunday.
“I did not watch the match live, but to play against the best team in the continent is always difficult, but I think respect and national pride is up for our national team and this is a good result.
The draw means that Sierra Leone rooted bottom of Group I with a single point from two matches and Ivory Coast are in third place with two points after two successive draws.
Sudan are top of the group as Gabon will host the 2017 Afcon which means the result of their matches is not noteworthy.
The African defending Champions Cote d’Ivoire now have more work to do if they are to qualify for the 2017 showpiece. Sudan host Sierra Leone next in March 2016.
