Alarming rate of crime against women

It is disheartening to note the alarming rate of heinous crimes against women in our society today, the reason being that women of Sierra Leone, despite anything to contrary, are architects of the fortunes of many successful men in the country.

In the rural settings, for example, while the men remain in the village, whiling away time in the hammocks, it is the women who rush to the farm, in the early hours, to carry out the challenging tasks of the day.

In the towns and cities, one only needs to visit the markets to appreciate the role played by women in the upkeep of many homes.

Among the educated ones, the women are often trusted with highly sensitive jobs than their male counterparts, who, in any case, become beneficiaries due to matrimonial relations.

For those who fear God, women were created to complete the creation strategy of the ‘table of opposites’, that science has come to use in electricity to generate energy. It is man and woman, together, that will regenerate the world.

In some cultures in Europe, France for instance, the injunction: “les femmes d’abord,” (Women first) is inscribed in all public places – trains, buses, lifts, etc. no woman stands in, say, a train or bus, while a man sits. Instinctively, the men always give priority to women, considered to be the better half of the men.

The present rate of crime against women should be professionally investigated, not by police but by research in order to know the root cause and address the social menace.

But of course, there is the fear that research is not considered as an important tool in bringing about good governance, which, in any case, is not the aspiration of many African governments, who depend on brute force, power of money and misguided youth for election victory.

However, the role of women in national politics, from the time of Sir Albert (Mammy Queens) to Dr. Siaka Stevens (Women’s League) has been  contributory factor to the peace that Sierra Leone is enjoying today, so, why should such group of people suddenly become the target of horrendous crimes perpetrated by apparent savages. They deserve the staunchest protection by the law and by every man. Let perpetrators be jailed for life or law be enacted to flog them, naked, publicly.

Any crime against a woman should be viewed as a crime against the nation for without them the nation goes into extinction.
