PPRC, ONS meet on insecurity

Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and the Office of National Security (ONS) on Wednesday 16th October engaged political parties to address insecurities emanating from inter party conflicts.

Speaking during the meeting held at the Cathedral House, Gloucester Street in Freetown, ONS National Coordinator Taracy Tarawally said the nation’s conduct in post conflict elections has been beyond suspicion and reproach, pointing the 2007 and 2012 elections in which the ONS coordinated the entire security sector effort to conduct those elections.

He said over the last few years, ONS has been aware of the developing trend of violence as ongoing assessment continues to highlight the potential disruptive nature of these developments, noting that it stands important for political parties to operate fully and clearly within the ambits of the law and   understand that violent confrontational behavior can and will have a negative effect on the country.

Tarawally advised political parties to refrain from the use of private security guards but encouraged them all to request for protection from the Sierra Leone Police Force charged with the responsibility of protecting Sierra Leone and her people.

The Commissioner, National Electoral Commission, Mohamed Nfa Conteh, noted that the Commission is finding way to tackle the challenges of the electoral calendar for 2015-2019 comprising a plethora of slated electoral activities like boundary delimitation, update of voter register, conduct of a possible referendum, Presidential, Parliamentary and local government elections in 2016/2017/2018 respectively.

Commissioner Nfa Conteh furthered that they are committed to ensuring that the electoral activities in 2015-2019 calendar will be conducted in a transparent and credible manner in the interest of national cohesion and peace.

Superintendent Augustine Kallie of the Sierra Leone Police pleaded with political parties to lessen their job by being peaceful.

Prince Coker of the People Democratic Party (PDP), in his contribution, identified the minimal registration cost for membership of political party as a serious problem as many are holders of multiple party membership cards, noting that such individuals are the problem shooters during elections.

Deputy Leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), in his contribution, advised compatriots not to either choose or elect dictatorial, corrupt and selfish people to lead them.
