A tribute to Sierra Leone’s Mamadu Alphajor Bah

PHILADELPHIA, USA :  Death is inevitable and when it comes, it is always greeted with sadness and despondency.  Philadelphia has always been considered as the City of Brotherly love and when I stood in the presence of onlookers during the month of Ramadam listening to Alphajor Bah talking about death and the non-permanence of life on earth tells me that, in this cruel life, some people predict their fortune.

Sierra Leone lost one of her illustrious football heroes to death few days ago. Mamadu Alphajor Bah was a quiet, religious and unassuming hero.  He served the country of his choice with dedication, commitment and diligence.  I never interacted with Alphajor when he was at his hey days as a footballer, serving the Green, White and Blue colors of Sierra Leone.  Infact those who interacted with him spoke of his civility, humility and dedication to his religion and his country.  I came very close to Alphajor during the month of Ramadan in Philadelphia, where he took part in every prayers where youths would gather at the prestigious King Jimmy rendezvous.  King Jimmy is the hub where youths from Sierra Leone would gather and discuss national issues as well as international matters bordering humanity.

At one particular night during the month of Ramadan, Alphajor stood in the midst of onlookers and started talking about life after death.  He spoke lengthily about the Prophet and his deeds and the way forward about youths in the contemporary world.  His speech was so pious and didactic to the youths.  A lady amongst the onlookers, Hafsatu Massie Barrie from Koinadugu was so thrilled that she asked whether Alphajor was bidding farewell to humanity.  When confronted with the question, Alphajor smiled and said,” If Allah takes my life today, I am grateful that I served my Country and the people of Sierra Leone”.  I was so thrilled from the words of Alphajor.

As the country mourns the death of Alphajor, we at King Jing Jimmy of Philadelphia express our condolence to the family of Alphajor and wish him eternal peace in the hands of God.

Alphajor, I spent few moments with you at King Jimmy where you spoke about Allah and the grave.  Today you are in the grave and our only prayer is to Allah to grant you eternal paradise.  The world you left behind is full of evil, mischief and we are all praying that we meet Allah in His paradise.  It is unfortunate that you left us so soon when we cherish your company, but Allah loves you best.

May Allah grant you paradise.
