Sierra Leoneans in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have started viewing programmes transmitted by the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) in Freetown via satellite service.

Safiatu Tunnis, a prominent Sierra Leonean teacher based in the Kingdom’s commercial city, Jeddah is the first Sierra Leonean who informed her compatriots in the Kingdom a few weeks ago, that her country’s public broadcaster has started disseminating news to this part of the world via satellite services.

The news was confirmed this week to reporters by the Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation, Elvis Gbanabom Hallowell, who disclosed at his New England office in Freetown that the SLBC tele-broadcast can now be viewed worldwide.

Reacting to the news on the telephone last night, Safiatu Tunnis, Assistant to the Academic Coordinator, Al-Nujoom International School (formerly the Sierra Leone Embassy School) said, now that the SLBC has awakened to thrive towards the 21st century with the implementation of modern technology in broadcasting, this will speedily lead the country towards development and prosperity.

“I think this development has also brought our country closer to us now and I believe this will motivate Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora to adhere to President Koroma’s clarion call to return home and help turn the country around,”  Safiatu Tunnis re-iterated.

Reports have it that the SLBC is operating on twenty (20) channels that can serve television viewers and radio listeners across the country and the world over with clear signals.

Meanwhile, President of the Sierra Leone Nationals Union in Saudi Arabia, Uthman Kargbo today confirmed that a good number of Sierra Leoneans resident in the Kingdom have contracted satellite dish installation technicians to install their dish system in their respective homes in order to view programmes transmitted by their country’s independent broadcaster.

SLBC is an autonomous legal entity established by an Act of Parliament under the Ernest Koroma-led APC government. This public broadcaster observes strict political impartiality in all the programmes produced.
