The prisons department on 28th Wednesday October 2009, received a 40ft container comprising of assorted skills training tools for carpentry, mechanical work, electrical, tailoring as well as electronics materials.
Prison department’s Procurement Manager Assistant Director Dennis Kofie Harman in an exclusive interview at the New England Prison headquarters said the container was donated to them by a Netherlands based organization Stitching Geared Gereedschap.
“We made an appeal to the organization through Sierra Leonean footballer Ibrahim ‘Obray’ Kargbo, who took up the challenges to help this department,” he said.
Mr. Harman further said the prison department has long since been in need of the items for the training of the inmates.
“We were actually in dire need of these items,” he said, pointing out that the gifts will be beneficial in encouraging inmates to learn skills that will prove to be beneficial to them in the future after spending their time.
The Prison Department has over time been constrained in the training of inmates, as all the equipments in the workshops had been destroyed or vandalized as a result of political upheavals.
All the mechanical instruments have been damaged beyond repairs and the parts are too expensive and the department cannot afford to buy new ones.
