In the wake of frequent complaints of poor circulation of the local tabloids (newspapers) owing to ineffectual distribution by the vendors, a member of Sierra Leone Vendors Association (SLVA), Hassan Jonah has expressed concern and therefore asks for a re-look.
“Poor circulation of newspapers doesn’t just affect the flow of information, but hinders the welfare of members of SLVA.”
Jonah, who has established himself in the newspaper industry, said the status of newspaper vendors continues to depreciate day in day out.
He made this confession while responding to a question from Sierra Express Media on issues describing the status of members of the Sierra Leone Vendors Association.
Unlike electronic media (radio and television), the means of passing information using the print media seemed remote to a number of readers, especially those living at provincials towns and villages.
“It is so because newspaper vendors are based in Freetown in spite of oddities faced,” he said.
“Owners of newspapers don’t seem to have the means of producing enough copies for their readers countrywide.”
Hassan, the former VP of the “SLVA” therefore called on the current Vendors Association to link up with newspaper owners in the implementation of strategies that will enhance nationwide circulation.
That such can be achieved through recruitment of members, enforcement of payments of monthly membership contributions and networking with partner newspaper organizations internationally.
Underscoring the importance of vendors in the newspaper industry, Jonah therefore called on the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) in involving them in certain decision making processes.
By this, he said, plenty could be achieved in the improvement of the welfare of journalists and vendors respectively.
He said however that the poor circulation of news leaflets is down pining to profit making strides of newspapers in this country.
“With support from proprietors of newspapers, it is obvious that SLVA’s goals in the establishment of regional news booths, deployment of devoted vendors and the monitoring of marketing activities to ensure accountability will e achieved unrestraint,” he emphasized.
