N’gowahun Declares Nine

Author: Donstance Koroma - SEM

Nine contestants have been declared the right to contest the paramount chieftaincy election come November, 30 2009 in the Gbendembu N’gowahun chiefdom. The declaration of rights took place at the Kalangba Court Barry, November 7th this year. Ahead of declaration day eleven people had claimed right to the throne. After going the declaration screening test, it was revealed that all eleven contestants have right to contest.

The Provincial Secretary North together with the paramount chief overseeing the elections in that chiefdom, PC Kandeh Finoh the third, interpreted the Local Government Act 2009, a clause which states that in an amalgamated chiefdom, nobody should contest where the paramount dies. As a result the son of late PC Kandeh Osiao III, Dr. Brima Osiao Kamara and Joseph Kanu at Masangbo were denied the right to contest for the throne this time since they are from N’gowahun. On this note nine people; four from the Sesay ruling house and five from the Kargbo house in Gbendembu were declared fit to run reports say.

Gbendembu N’gowahun chiefdom in the Bombali district has a long standing political history. Findings reveal that the chiefdom was amalgamated after the suspension of the late PC Kandeh Baba Sesay was appointed to oversee the amalgamated chiefdom. His fifteen year rule united the people who agreed on the rotation of the throne. After his death in 1963, the late Kandeh Osiao Kamara was crowned in1964 from the N’gowahun section which showcased that Gbendembu should rule after his death. As fate would have it, his death in May last year gave the right to Gbendembu which now manifests.

Meanwhile four families; Kanu, Kamara, Kargbo and Sesay belong to the chieftain in that chiefdom. The nine candidates include; Abu Makokoi Sesay, Kandeh Monoh Kargbo, Manso Kargbo, Solomon Samba Kargbo, Faray Kargbo, Joseph Katta Kargbo, Musa Thaim Sesay, Alimamy Alpha Sesay and Abu Bakarr Sesay.
