The Director of Foundation for Democratic Initiative and Development (FDID), Hindowa Saidu, in commemorating International Youth Day Friday 12th compelled government, NGO’s and the newly established Youth Commission to unfailingly create an enabling environment suitable for youths to acquire skills.

He made this statement while addressing scores of youths at communities in the east part of Freetown.

At a well attended press conference which was held at FDID’s office at No. 24 Sackville Street, the Director, Mr. Hindowa Saidu, urged the youth to take advantage of this year’s youth day and respond to the challenges facing them.

He said as youth they should try to engage themselves on issues of developmental relations and avoid idling away their time at ghettos or parade city streets waiting for government to provide jobs for them.

He urged the youth to devise options that will make them successful self employed citizens.

“As for the majority of you who are unskilled and school drop outs,” he said, “I ask that you try to empower yourself through skills training programmes so that you could stand the chance of being gainfully employed or be self employed.”

“Do not consider yourself as being vulnerable and marginalized, but proudly consider refer to yourself as a major players in development of Sierra Leone as a country.”

Speaking on the theme: “Youth arise, take your destiny in your own hands,” Director Saidu urged the youth to get up their slumbers, redefine their focuses and be positive and result making citizens.

“With this and in a bid to re-breed the image of the youth of Sierra Leone from being drug abusers, drug peddlers, perpetrators of violence and idlers, it is the wish of FDID as an organization to see the youth rise and do positive things,” he emphasized.

“An idle mind is the devil’s workshop and so, minds of youth should be pre-occupied with a positive mental attitude of how to succeed in life with or without government’s intervention.”

An awareness raising visitation at respective youth hideouts at Fomex and Kanikay formed part of the celebration.

During an interactive session with a cross section of youths within communities visited, members of FDID outreach team urged the young and growing up to desist from drugs, alcohol and vicious involvement.
