Dr. Leslie E.T. Shyllon Dies

University Don and well known religious leader Dr. Lslie E.T. Shyllon has died.

The well known academic passed away last week end following a short illness. Before his death, he had authored two books: One on medical ethics and the second on two centuries of Christianity in the African Province of Freedom.

The late man was known for his Biblical and Religious Studies program in Fourah Bay College, and numerous great Sierra Leoneans passed through his tutelage. He will be remembered for his interesting sermons and his conflict with students. Sierra Leone Poet Rev. Kainwo has already written a poem in his memory.

Breaking Tradition Or Sustaining Human Rights

Sierra Leoneans have taken seriously to democracy, such that they are ready to challenge all former African beliefs as long as it is not patterned according to Western human rights values.

The latest has been the complaint of Madam Elizabeth Kumba Simbiwa Sorgbo Tortor who was recently denied a chieftaincy symbol because she is a woman.

Madam Tortor had apparently tried to test an old held tradition in Kono, Eastern Sierra Leone, where women are now allowed to be paramount chiefs.

While claiming a gross violation of her rights, asserting that it is “a gross barbaric attempt to muzzle her right to participate in the chieftaincy elections in her chiefdom, the authorities have a totally different point of view. According to the tradition in Kono District, women are not allowed to serve as paramount chiefs, unlike in the South where it is accepted for females to serve in this capacity.

“Traditions die hard, and we should realize that even with their call for open governance and democracy, not all British citizens can be king, so too in our part of the world this is our tradition that no woman should be paramount chief and even the British Colonial masters did not challenge us and we are not ready to change it,” said a senior authority in Kono.

Police Officers Supporting Armed Robbers?

After repeated calls to the Ernest Koroma government, which were repeatedly ignored, that some senior police officers in the country are engaged in aiding and abetting armed robbers, especially in the city, the truth of the matter has started emerging.

The latest has been the arrest of two senior OSD officers: Assistant Superintendent of Police M’bayo and Inspector Abass. These two police officers were arrested as a result of investigations proving they are engaged in the nefarious act of collaborating with armed robbers.

Now the revelation has started emerging that some personnel of the police, supposed to guide the lives and property of the people are now engaged in doing the direct opposite.

Another police officer whose name has been linked with the armed robbery in the country is Fayia Kawallu, who is already helping Criminal Investigations officers to nab armed robbers in the city. Kawallu is now naming his former conspirators with whom he helped to forcefully take away the earned cash and property of people.

All armed robbers caught in the act have been arrested with government issued arms and ammunition. In a more open government, the Inspector General of Police, would have to explain this odd development in the ranks of the police.
