Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, 31st October 2011 – The Airtel Rising Stars program kicked off yesterday with a focus on a player development model embraced by the Manchester United Soccer Schools Coaching program.
The training of the 16 youngsters at the camp will focus on the development of each of the players through five tenets that are poised to make them wholesome players. The Manchester United Soccer School Coaches outlined the areas as technical abilities, tactical acumen, physical development, psychological and social skills development.
Commenting on the clinic’s program the Manchester United Soccer Schools Head Coach for the Dar Clinic and spokesperson – Mr. Billy Miller – said that the model puts the player at the center and ensures that each young player and the coaches’ work together to achieve their optimum level of performance.
“This model recognizes the player as the most important person in the game and encourages the players to develop their game, make and learn from any mistakes whilst building the requisite skills for the players in and off the field.” Said Mr. Miller
The first day’s program saw the coaches take the boys and girls through structured sessions that focused on the technical and tactical aspects in a soccer match situation and culminating in a workshop whose theme -what makes a great player – provided an interactive opportunity for the coaches and students to analyze some of the well-known players across all field positions.
The technical training sessions saw the coaches take the aspiring soccer starlets through the paces of basic passing and dribbling skills. The players were organized in what the coaches described as small sided games that allow players to have many touches and develop a wide range of passing techniques, change body positions with a view of receiving the next pass and develop the confidence to always seek the ball even under pressure from opposing players.
The 16 aspiring stars were selected from a soccer talent program – the Airtel Rising Stars – that was organized in the format of regional and national tournaments culminating in exclusive soccer clinics in Gabon and Tanzania under the tutelage of the Manchester United Soccer Schools coaching staff. The countries represented at the Dar es Salaam clinic are: Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Kenya, and Malawi.
Other Clinic Updates
On Saturday, the Airtel Rising Stars attended a highly exciting match between two of Tanzanian’s biggest clubs in terms of followers, Yanga and Simba. The match held at the venue of the clinic, the 60,000-seater National Stadium ended with Yanga beating Simba by a solitary goal. The result saw Simba’s 11 match unbeaten run broken with Yanga narrowing their lead to three points. Simba still lead the table by 27 points, while Yanga have 24.
According to Billy Miller, the Manchester United Soccer Schools Head Coach for the Dar Clinic, the match provided an opportunity for players to observe players in a real game situation, how they move with and without the ball, set pieces, creating space and defending amongst others.
