As Mayor flouts bail condition, ACC says assertion is untrue… thumbnail

Mayor Herbert George Williams, who faces charges of corruption (25 counts) and whose bail condition was Le 500 million, two sureties and two house books correspondingly, Monday 28th, enjoys bail concession; submitting one house book instead of two.

The Anti Corruption commissioner says assertion is false, and that the indicted Mayor produced two sureties and two house books preceding his release.

Commissioner Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara Friday 2nd told Sierra Express Media that Mayor Herbert fulfilled bail criteria thus surrendering two house books, two sureties and Le 500 million before his release Monday 28th.

It’s been disclosed however that the indicted Mayor never surrendered two house books as told by the ACC big man.

That the Mayor produced one house book instead of two as required by law, but was given special consideration and was unreservedly released by investigators of the ACC.

A source who asked for his name not to be mentioned said however that a lawyer who was asked to represent the Mayor while in custody afterwards declined when later he found out that his client (the Mayor) had not met the required bail condition – two house books, etc.

Leaks are that a close aid to Mayor Herbert (name/designation withheld), up until yesterday, untiringly contacted house owners in Freetown, asking them to help their man (Mayor) with a house book to enable him to meet the conditions of bail, and not expose hidden ‘special consideration’ given the Mayor by the ACC.

In a telephone interview, the Anti Corruption commissioner, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, he denied releasing the Mayor on grounds of ‘special consideration’ as alleged by some section of the public.

“The Mayor’s and the 9 others bail conditions were varied.  As for the Mayor, it was Le 500 million, two sureties and two house books,” the ACC commissioner said.

Even though ACC denies releasing the Mayor on the basis of ‘special consideration,’ it is disclosed that Mayor Herbert and associates, up until Saturday 5th made calls to friends and relatives, asking them assist with a ‘house book’ to enable the culprit (Mayor Herbert) meets bail condition before his appearance in court today.

Public’s estimations state however that the ACC, on a number of occasions, lost cases owing to lack of evidence.

That if at just the release of the Mayor on bail, accusations are beginning to surface that the ACC had flouted bail requirements, thus granting him (Mayor) bail, the public is, but apprehensive how the trial could be fairly conducted in the well of Sierra Leone’s High Court.
