Minister inspects road work

“Work in Moyamba town appears slow due to the unavailability of funds. Five roads should be reconstructed here, and Siaka Stevens Street, located in the central part of the township is major to us,” residents say.

Residents say they appreciate the road reconstruction strides as to them it helps open up Moyamba to the rest of the country.

What seems frustrating for them is the long delay in the project, leaving the feeling that the roads have been abandoned.

“Perhaps the ‘spot check’ by the Minister of Works and Management of SLRA will speed up the process,” they said.

“In Bo, constructions are 90% complete.”

“Among the five major roads under reconstruction, Tikonko road stands out as the most strategic, stretching onto Bo town.”

The smoothness of the roads in Bo is considered a factor for the increasing accident rate.

Residents say fixing up road signs and speed bumps may be helpful.

Kenema and Kailahun have similar tracks. The road linking Kenema to Pendembu is one of Sierra Leone’s widest roads.

Reconstruction of the Kenema to Pendembu road appears last, but it is not clear when it will end. In Kenema, Show Avenue, Kaisamba Terrace and Mission Roads are on track. But on King Street work seems a bit slow amidst promised of completion by May.

In Kailahun Mofindor, Manu Sewalu, Council, Moiwo and Masanta roads are all on course.

In each of the four districts, Moyamba, Bo, Kenema and Kailahun, 5.5 Kilometer roads will be reconstructed with a life span of about forty years.

Political argument is centered on the economic visibility of these roads. But what appears visible in the townships is that residents appreciate the reconstruction of the once battered roads.
