The Army Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier General Yirah Koroma (in photo), Thursday 9th refers as ‘baseless and unfounded’ a press release recently put out by the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
At the usual information press briefing, Brigadier Yirra told sections of the media that assertions by the leadership of the SLPP that the governing APC party engages in the transporting of ex-combatants to the southeastern to register is merely an attempt to ignite violence in the coming elections.
He assured all that there is formidable security presence at respective border crossing points in the country.
“Our presences are visible at boarder areas and we’ve been doing joint patrols with the Liberia UN troops regularly,” Brigadier Yirrah emphasized.
“That even though sections of the media have alleged however that hundreds have crossed over from neighbouring Liberia using the Zimmi axis to register for the November 17th pools, security in that part of the country remains calm- no threat or cause for alarm at all.”
It is fact that there have been claims and counter claims from the two main political parties in Sierra Leone – the opposition SLPP and ruling APC regarding allegation that ex-combatants are transported to the southeast to register.
This, to Sierra Leoneans, has mounted debates at respective quarters thus creating panic in minds of all.
It is still not clear whether assertions of the opposition SLPP against the ruling APC are considerately looked at by the police, office of national security, national electoral commission and the political party registration commission.
Disclosures are that the two main political parties ceaselessly transport people from neighbouring countries – Guinea and Liberia – to register in Sierra Leone come the November 17th elections.
