JB Dauda leads Sierra Leone to Commonwealth thumbnail

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is currently in London to attend the Extraordinary meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) of which Sierra Leone is a member.

Joseph Babdawa Dauda is attending the meeting at the Commonwealth Secretariat, Marlboro House, South West London, with ministers of Commonwealth countries to discuss the findings of the CMAG ministerial mission to Malvies where the Island’s democratically elected President Mohamed Nasheed was overthrown earlier this month.

The three-person ministerial mission was led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Communications of Trinidad and Tobago, Surujrattan Rambachan and was accompanied by Dr. Dipu Moni, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, and Dennis Richardson AO, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia.

The mission held detailed discussions with a wide range of stakeholders, including the country’s President Mohamed Hassan Manik, former President Nasheed, the country’s Speaker Abdulla Shahid, Chief Justice, Ahmed Faiz Hussain; relevant police and military personnel; political parties, statutory commissions; as well as international partners and civil society.

The Sierra Leonean Foreign Minister who was accompanied this morning by Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Edward Mohamed Turay, is expected to make solid representation at today’s meeting.

Earlier this year, Sierra Leone’s President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma launched a web portal known as Transparency Sierra Leone Portal – www.transparencysierraleone.gov.sl – aimed at enhancing the transparency and accountability of his government.

The portal was established by the Commonwealth Secretariat for the Government of Sierra Leone, and was unveiled in Freetown, Sierra Leone in a bid to build on the Open Government Initiative in promoting good governance and democracy.
