OGI Town Hall Meeting and Field Trip

Author: Press Secretariat State House

Where: Kailahun Town, Kailahun District.  When: Saturday, 28 November, 2009

Following a series of parliamentary town hall meetings in Kenema, Koinandugu and Pujehun Districts, the Open Government Initiative (OGI) Secretariat commenced a new phase of its mandate, this time focusing exclusively on the judicial arm of the Government. These Judiciary town hall meetings bring together members of the Justice Sector and the community to promote communication and common understanding between them and the people, while finding workable solutions to problems affecting this sector. This weekend, OGI will hold its last Judiciary town hall meeting in Kailahun Town. During this trip, OGI will coordinate a field visit to the local prisons and police followed by a town hall meeting at the Kailahun Court Barry.

The concept of Open Government Initiative (OGI) was borne out of His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma’s Bumbuna Presidential Retreat in January 2008. At Bumbuna, he expressed a commitment to ensure that democracy, the Rule of Law and free-flow of information through open channels of communication amongst the three organs of Government and between Government and the people prevail during his presidency. OGI is a direct response to the President’s expressed commitment. Through OGI, information will flow freely between Government and the public.

OGI conducted four successful interactive field trips since September 2008 which were focused entirely on the Executive branch of the Government. The recently concluded phase targeted the Legislature. The first Parliamentary field trip was conducted in Kenema in September 2009 where basic social needs ranging from youth unemployment to lack of health and educational facilities were highlighted, followed by visits to Koinandugu and Pujehun Districts in October 2009. Using the same decentralization approach as during parliamentary town hall meetings, the judicial outreaches of OGI were scheduled for Kambia, Bonthe, and Kailahun Districts. The meetings in Kambia and Bonthe were very fruitful and successful, presenting a forum for the people to discuss matters of judicial interest with the relevant stakeholders.

OGI invites all Sierra Leoneans to attend its last field trip in Kailahun District on Saturday 28 November, 2009. As part of its sensitization and mobilization activities, OGI will organize two radio programmes on a local radio station that will be linked to Radio Maria, Eastern Radio, and Radio Citizen. The first radio programme, aired on Thursday 26 November from 8:00pm to 9:00pm, will explain the OGI concept, past and future activities of the project, as well as its accomplishments. The second radio programme, focusing predominantly on women and youth issues, will be broadcast on Friday 27 November, from 8:00pm to 9:00pm.
