The 40 Paramount Chieftaincy Elections that should have commenced on the 25th November in Port Loko, Kambia, Bombali, Tonkolili, Koinadugu, Kono, Kailahum, and Kenema have all been postponed to the 5th-23rd December 2009.
In a press release, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development explained that due to some technical and logistical difficulties, the ministry with the National Electoral Commission (NEC) has cause to reschedule the election of paramount chief in some 40 chiefdom in the country.
However, the press release did not specify the types of difficulties the Ministry and NEC are encountering.
Polling time table for Paramount Chieftaincy elections shows that elections in Lokomasama chiefdom in Port Loko district, Kowa chiefdom in Moyamba, and Nimiyama chiefdom in Kono will be held on the 5th December at the chiefdom headquarter towns of Petifu, Njama and Sewafe respectively.
Kambia Bramaia chiefdom, Bo Gbo and Kono Soa chiefdoms election will be held on the 7th December at the chiefdom headquarter towns of Kukuna, Dambala and Kainkordu.
Kambia Gbinle Dixing chiefdom, Bonthe Sittia and Kailahun Penguia chiefdom elections will be held on the 9th of December at the chiefdom headquarter towns of Tawaya, Yonni and Sandaru.
Bombali Gbendembu Ngowahun chiefdom and Kailahun Njaluahun chiefdom will held on the 11th of December at the chiefdom headquarter towns of Kalangba and Segbwema. Tonkolili Tane chiefdom, Bonthe Sogbini chiefdom and Kailahun Kissi Teng chiefdom elections will be held on the 13th December at the chiefdom headquarter towns of Matotoka, Tihun and Kangama. Tonkolili Kholifa, Bonthe Bum chiefdom and Kenema Nomo chiefdom election will be held on the 15th December at the chiefdom headquarter towns of Magburaka, Madina and Faama. The last rounds of election will be on the 23rd of December in Bombali Sand Loko chiefdom and Moyamba Lower Banta chiefdom in the chiefdom headquarter towns of Kamalo and Gbangbatoke.
However, citizens are viewing the postponement as a political interference by the Government which the deputy Minister has refuted.
