City Mayor Rebuke Over Missing Clock

The Freetown City Mayor Herbert George Williams has been lashed again over a missing clock hand on the Freetown clock tower at Eastern Police. The £45,000 clock has faced a new reproach from the public on the issue of a missing hand. This is not the first time the City Mayor has encountered such condemnation as the civil society movement for Sierra Leone was the first to have levied such criticism, considering its misrepresentation of taxpayer’s money.

ACC Boss condemns Part 5 Of The 1965 Public Order Act

The head of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Mr. Abdul Tejan-Cole has expressed condemnation of the 1965 Public Order Act. He said during his term as president of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) he had conspicuously make it known that Part 5 of the said Act which deals with seditious and criminal libel needed urgent repeal. In the Annual General Meeting of SLAJ at the Wusum Hotel in Makeni, he also implored Journalists to respect the decision of the Supreme Court. He further warned journalists to push forward in engaging parliamentarians in relieving the libel lures.

Dinner held in Maryland in Honor of police boss

An exclusive dinner has been held in Maryland USA in honor of Sierra Leone police Boss, Brima Acha Kamara. The bestowing ceremony of this accolade to the police boss was witnessed by patriotic Sierra Leoneans from all walks of life in the US. Brima Acha Kamara received one of the highest honors in Britain for manning Security in post conflict Sierra Leone; he told the audience that the accolade was bestowed upon him because of his good work. His speech was a momentous one which also gives the opportunity to Sierra Leoneans abroad to interact with him.

SLAJ AGM comes to an end

The three day Annual General Meeting of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) finally came to an end 29^th December 2009 in the northern city of Makeni. In the AGM, burning issues affecting journalists and journalism was tabled and thoroughly discussed. The indefatigable SLAJ President Umaru Fofana highlighted some of the achievements of the association under his leadership. He said they have made frantic efforts to acquire an office space which will house the association and other affiliated media organizations. He further disclosed that most of the assistance in hosting this meeting comes from the British High Commission, UNDP, and the American Embassy.

Mr. Fofana also added that the ruling against the association has given them more enthusiasm to lobby law makers to reveal the seditious libel law. The IMC Chairman Mrs. Bernadette Cole in her speech demanded responsible journalism and added that come 2010 all media houses in the country, both print and electronic must show evidence of payment of NASSIT and Income Tax for their staff before licenses are awarded to them.

Elephant poachers arrested

10 elephant poachers Sierra Leonean and Guinean have been reprimanded by the police for unlawful killing the infinitesimal number of elephants and buffalos in the only wild life park, Outamba Kilimi National Park in Koinadugu district. Senior superintendent of the Agriculture Ministry’s Conservation and Wild Life Unit has revealed to the press that six elephants were killed and crudely butchered for the sale of their tusks and meat.
