Making issues out of filth

Making issues out of filth thumbnail

Sierra Express Media is displeased with the tolerable filth engulfing the city of Freetown. These days the gutters of the main streets in the capital are filled with garbage comprising of industrial polythene, mango waste, and above all street trading is abetting the dismal filth adorning the city into health complications.

Adding insult to injury the Guma Valley Water Company has taken days without supplying water to main residents and it is complicating further to see how hygiene and sanitary measures are enhanced without an adequate water supply system.

With regard to the filth, the Freetown Waste Management Company is virtually taking no effort in caring for the mess around the city. In fact none of their sanitary laws are put to effect and the situation continues in the same direction. As long as street trading is maintained, it is quality time and effort any waste management company would spend to earn a good name.

The spill-over effect to this menace is the resultant increase in the breed of plasmodium able mosquitoes that are germinating the malaria parasite on human bodies. Despite efforts by health bodies to combat the disease, it prevalence is high. It is a failure for the country to celebrate a whole healthcare week at a period the country is busy recording fresh and increased cases of malaria victims. It is established that malaria is the world’s most killer disease  and the world is trying to its wider approach to curtail this menace but our approach in Sierra Leone is much more laced with political allegiance. And again we see that protectionism of the sole authority of the Freetown Waste Management Company is breeding much of a leeway to not being able to curtail the mess in the city.

To the water shortage insult, the city has been for days without adequate water supply. It is bad. For once water which should be naturally a free commodity has been commercialised to a point that water processing companies are outsourcing it for sale. We are calling on the management of the Sierra Leone Water Company to step up in their supply system and provide this life wanting commodity.
