“Sierra Leone has Social problems”

Line Manager of the Ross Road Police Division, Mary Macaulay has told Serra Express Media that there is an ultimate rise in the number of social problems in the country.  She said her division had over sixty cases of street kids who are in conflict with the law on various offenses.

She cited an instance on the issue of a 13 year old boy (name withheld) who was brought to her Division on allegations of stealing and loitering. Gbassay’s story (not his real name), according to Macaulay unfolds in this way: “He lives with his two parents who are both petty traders (address withheld).  They are living in a single room with nine children. One day he woke up to ease him-self and met his two parents on the height of making love. He said it was a bad experience to him, and he decided not to be sleeping his parents’ room any longer to avoid re-experiencing the same thing. He began sleeping in a car nearby his parents’ only room. The owner caught him one day sleeping in his car and decided to report the matter at the Ross Road Police Division.”

According to Miss Macaulay this incident was recorded on June 22 this year. On this development, she said the Family Support Unit is abreast of the issues of social problems related to the welfare of children and are working on it, but it is a spelt fact that such issues are on the increase and are becoming a societal menace in Sierra Leone.

She called on the need for proper parenting care and control of birth which have been the resultant recourse for such problems in the country.
