A young Sierra Leonean with a desire to help his country, an outstanding human rights activist whose endeavours led to the establishment of a global network for children in crises, an individual with a quest to provide education to people who can’t afford it; was honored by the New York State Assembly in the United States of America, with a legislation sponsored by Assembly member Edward RA from Albany New York for his continued advocacy and fund raising to provide scholarships to children in Sierra Leone. At the New York State Assembly, in a ceremony, Salifu Kamara was presented with the “Award for Outstanding Contribution to Education” by the New York State Assembly on June 14, 2012
The citation states that the leadership and contribution of Mr. Salifu Kamara, in support of young people especially the war orphaned children and poor children is well known. “The work you do each day is amazing and inspiring. As a thinker and doer you are a role model and a believer in change,” the citation says.
Salifu was recognised because of his outstanding leadership abilities and the astonishing impact his humanitarian activities have had on a number of people. He has enriched the lives of people and he has changed their lives for better.
Speaking at the ceremony, Salifu said that “I am very pleased and inspired by this award. I strongly believe that a nation can only succeed to eradicate poverty, crime and hate if her society is well schooled with formal education especially the young generation. Salifu Said a powerful and economically prosperous nation is a nation that is conscious of the influence formal education and institutions are capable of doing to support democratic leadership, the economy, civil society and the world. When we educate a child we are creating the conditions necessary to a good democratic nation and a potential good leader for our society’’, said Salifu.
“His contribution and commitment to the cause of young people cannot be underestimated,” said Mr. David Davies, Communications Director of MESSEH INTERNATIONAL which is the institution responsible for promoting Salifu’s humanitarian activities across the world. “His work has always been ground-breaking, but equally important, Salifu has been generous in his efforts, collaborating with international bodies, along with his contribution to education. Meeting Salifu completely change my life. He is just an incredible young man and someone you can always trust and love to be around with’’, said David.
Apart from his handsome look and beautiful smile, his sense of humor, intelligence; love and humanitarian heart and respect for others made him an outstanding young leader. It was Salifu’s dedication to help other children access education through his advocacy skills captured the New York State legislature Hon Edward RA through his good friend Louis and Careh High School to sponsored a legislations at the New York State Assembly in recognition of Salifu’s work to the people of Bafodia in Sierra Leone, a poor village ravaged during the Sierra Leone brutal civil war.
Salifu is the founder of the Global Network for Children in Crises Organization, an international non-profit organization base in the US, working to provide school supplies, scholarships, health equipment and micro finance for disadvantaged persons in Sierra Leone, and across Africa.
Salifu is a native born of Bafodia village in Sierra Leone. He described himself as “voice for the voiceless” and dedicated to his mission of improving the conditions of children, a segment of Sierra Leone’s population heavily affected by the country’s 11-years civil war. Salifu was directly affected by war, lost his parents and siblings and was severely beaten by armed groups during the civil war. Salifu Kamara moved to the United States six years ago and he has been greatly involved in championing the cause of empowering young people in his village of Bafodia in Sierra Leone through his robust scholarships programs.
Amazingly, within the period of 6 years living in the United States Salifu has made the most incredible higher connection you could imagine which includes congressmen, Senators, business leaders, intellectuals, young and old students and non-students are all in support to help Salifu achieve his dreams of helping his own people of Sierra Leone.
