The team from Pujehun lost 5-4 on penalties to Lumbebu of Kenema after goalless at full time at the Kenema City field on Friday. The best player of last year’s tournament Patrick Gbenda failed to shine as he was one of the two players who missed penalties sending Makabi Stars packing.

Makabi Stars participated in the Eastern region tournament instead of the Southern regional competition currently taking in Bo because the organisers decided to divide this year’s regional competitions in to five zones and they were picked for the Kenema zone.

Lumbebu are now in group stage B alongside fellow city team Shankill Miners and Young Emirates of Pujehun. Shankill eliminated Lumbeburma Academy also from Kenema, thanks to Mohamed O. Lamin whose strike gave them a 1-0 victory.

Young Emirates defeated Koindu United 5-4 on penalties after goalless draw at regulation time to send United home to Kailahun.

Lumbebu and Shankill met in the opening match in group B and it finished goalless.

There is only one match in group A on Saturday following the disqualification of Makbele Warriors of Pujehun for violent conduct. It’s now a straight fight between two Kenema teams Kallon FC and Maadason Academy. The winner goes to the final.

In the female category, Kenema’s Kahunla Queens were disqualified for using over age players despite their 1-0 victory over Vision United also from Kenema in a group B match.

This means the two games Kahunla have played have been notified leaving Vision United and Kailondo Starlets to fight for a place in the final when the two sides clash on Saturday.

In the other female match of the day, Jawi FC of Daru and Kenema’s City Rovers played to a goalless draw in a group B game.

Jawi FC have now recorded one point in two matches and can’t make it to the final because Jam Jam FC of Kenema already have three points.

Saturday’s match between Jam Jam FC and City Rovers is going to be interesting. Jam Jam need at lease to secure a draw to qualify to the final whilst City Rovers need a win to have any chance of qualifying.

The cardinal function of a journalist, they say, is firstly to inform, but the emphasis here is on accuracy.  The journalist has the sacred responsibility to inform the public accurately, giving due regard to ‘facts’ as obtained from ‘a reliable source’.  This is the first social function of a journalist.
