Every year, Sierra Leoneans in Texas tackle the ritual of making New Year resolutions in different ways. Despite that the community being largely divided into different groups in our metropolitan cities of Dallas Fort Worth, the people still have a conventional wisdom to support each other in our different celebrations. Some organizations and individuals will focus on the compelling challenges that aid the New Year a successful year. Others will first celebrate for a successful end of year before planning for the New Year.  (Photo: SSSS Celebrating Africa Unity Cup Trophy)

Since it became an autonomous organization, which the entire community identified to bring all Sierra Leoneans together on the eve of the New Year, Sierra Star Soccer Association (SSSA) is planning a big event on December 31st to bid a farewell to the end of yet again another long year 2009, and welcoming the New Year 2010.

The people in Dallas believe that welcoming the New Year by celebrating it in a form of fundraising dance is not a new phenomenon in our culture. It is widely accepted and that night has been dedicated to a club that holds the main social event that easily binds us together (soccer).  Sierra Stars is the only club that has a zero tolerance in its establishment and is recognized to bring the entire Sierra Leone community together on the final night of the year according to Patrick Dangawalli.

After witnessing a successful year 2009, the club is intending to highlight some of its works for the year in the scheduled date Thursday, December 31st, the date that has been occasionally scheduled by the club to celebrate the end of year and welcome the New Year. Community members were kindly asked to support this function by donating at least $10 as an entry fee.

The President of the organization, Mr. Patrick Dangawalli unveiled that during this year’s activities the club has participated in various soccer games in the city and outside the state of Texas.  In Dallas, the club registered for the North Texas Premier League, a division-one soccer league in Texas where it reached to a play-off level. It has won the African Unity cup in a tournament that brought together in festivity all Africans in the city. DFW International, a non-profit organization that is nurturing the African culture in the United States organized the African Unity tournament. The club also won the “Steady-Bongo trophy” in a challenging match between Liberia and Sierra Leone. Outside the state, the club was the forefront participant to the Sierra Leone Old Athletic Association (SLOAA) yearly soccer tournament in Columbus, Ohio.

Dangawalli said that the club would present several awards to outstanding players and non-players. After a thorough assessment on individual’s performances within the community, the club reserved an award of recognition to one person for the lifelong dedication to our community service and have played some significant leadership role in “bringing and connecting the entire community into one umbrella organization” said the Team manager.
