ACC’s Fight Against Corrupt Officials Bears Fruit

ACC’s Fight Against Corrupt Officials Bears Fruit thumbnail

The long awaited case featuring the Freetown City father, Mayor Herbert George Williams and seven of his accomplices on charges of a series of criminal related offences by the Anti-Corruption Committee (ACC) on Friday August 10th bore fruit in the High Court of Sierra Leone when Ugandan Presiding Judge,George Justice Katutsi found the accused guilty over the alleged corrupt related crimes.

This decision is considered laudable and is favored by many Sierra Leoneans as they say it is a step in restoring back the lost faith in the legal system in this country.  Ever since these names were mentioned, standing on the dock of this nation’s legal system, people started questioning the credibility of a fair and unbiased judgment in waiting as many said it has almost become a political culture under the current ACC Commissioner, Fitzgerald Kamara, of losing high profile cases at a time many expect a cup of justice to be delivered in the right direction.

The hunch turns back to the public eyebrow raised each time corruption indictment charges are served by the ACC to state individuals, pointing it to the plethora of high profile cases being lost by the Commission, but the stark contrast now is this dilution of the people “man’s minds theory of doubt,” when these officials have been found guilty and who will be sentenced later in the month.

This news ushered in a sigh of relief as the citizens of the streets of Freetown were seen in smiling and jubilant moods as this is the justice they have being waiting for.  Gauging comments of the ordinary man, this judgment by the High Court will prove to people in positions of trust that no one is bigger than the state, as the rend of neglect over state functionaries and resources being siphoned by public contractors has become over-bearing.  Although there are mixed feelings amongst a few people, those views are by themselves subjective and must not stalemate the true spirit of nationalism, or our drive to bring back the glorious days when we were referred to as the pride of British West Africa.

In view of this new development, many say it is the dawn of a new era and as we cry to put an end over stalemating tax payer’s money and national coffers; monies paid by tax payers must be seen to be directed in the right direction rather than being recycled into the personal pockets of certain people.
