ACC May Rope Mayor Again

ACC May Rope Mayor Again thumbnail

The Anti Corruption Commissioner, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara is optimistic that the commission may seek an appeal on the judgment that convicted the erstwhile Mayor of the Freetown Municipality. In a telephone interview with the ACC boss yesterday afternoon, he intimated to Sierra Express Media that at the moment the Commission is carefully perusing the judgment and may make an appeal. Mr. Kamara made these assertions in a rather somber mood. The convicted mayor, Herbert George Williams (in photo) was liberated from the dock amidst thunderous applause by his supporters as they trotted along Pademba Road/Liverpool Street intersection.

Ugandan Judge Hon. John Bosco Katutsi required George Williams to pay a fine of a Le170 million or be incarcerated for a period of three years for counts 24 and 25 respectively in a range of corruption related offences. He admitted that his conviction is “a slap on his face” as he has “served the country with honesty and sincerity.”  The embattled Mayor further boasted that the judgment is certainly not the end of his political career, but by all indications, the interpretation of the said judgment debars the Mayor from having a political party symbol as well as holding any public office again. Director of Public Education and Outreach Shollay-Davies noted that the Commission preferred a custodian sentence rather than a fine thus serving as a deterrent to corrupt practices.

Meanwhile, observers are of the view that the judgment should have been much tougher, since the monies and other offences that the Mayor was docked for were more than twice that for which he was fined.
