Sierra Express Media (SEM) has been following of late developments related to the establishment of an electoral college using an approach called inclusive governance. What we fathom is that there is brilliance in establishing the electoral college since the onus is given this time to the community people the politicians do represent in the various government institutions. What is made up of the said concept is what we think is the task political parties owe to the electorate in whose hands the responsibility of nominating the key players lie this time round. To start with the phrase “Electoral College” is just one confusing jargon, but it means the establishment of able bodied men system who work at different Districts, Wards and Chiefdoms wherein the various political actors are expected to stand from.
In the past the masses used to cry foul over choices of candidature vying for the vacancies of Members of Parliament, Local Council positions including that of District Chairmen and other important viable positions. On a more deliberate sense the establishment of the Electoral College system sterns out to discourage the flagrant participation of foreign based aspirants that often come to just have a feel of power. Reasons for these are picked from the fact that most of these foreign based fly-by night politicians have been misrepresenting their people and as such the system fits in place a mechanism to have people who are aware of the needs of their constituents to represent them and see where it goes in terms of transforming the agenda for change into the agenda for prosperity much yearned by the people of this country.
On this SEM would say enough sensitization is needed on the introduction of the Electoral College system to have the participant know what they are going to be engaged on so also to have the system succeed in this drive.
