How safe are the NEC Officials?

How safe are the NEC Officials? thumbnail

As we count down to the 2012 November Elections we begin to scale the various factors that are expected to ensure that the country witnesses a peaceful, non-violent, free and fair democratic process through the polls.

The 2012 decider is presumed to be a test case of the relatively fragile peace and democracy that we have nurtured over the past decade. At least we can be assured that the National Electoral Commission (NEC) is up to the task of turning in results that will be accepted by the entirety of the people of Sierra Leone.

Now news of how people in high place are luring NEC officials in a bid to thwart the electioneering process to the bane of our expectation. Unprecedented stories of physical attacks are being directed at NEC staff members to an extent that a serving Minister of Government has been reported to the police and the report is currently experiencing undue delay.

We marvel how a minister could condescend as low as exchanging fists with a NEC official on duty and go scot-free. This must be viewed as a dastardly attempt to interfere with the work of the commission at this crucial period when the elections peers.

The eyes of the umpires must be beaming on the reckless spate of intimidation that has gripped a few staff members of NEC, which we understand is said to have been orchestrated by no less a personality than a substantive Minister.

The members of staff of the NEC must be left alone to discharge their duties unhindered and free of intimidation from whosoever, be it from the political parties themselves or the citizenry.

Meanwhile the case of the NEC Coordinator that was allegedly beaten, molested and subsequently relieved of his duty, which matter is still in the desk of the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Karrow Kamara must be looked into with a bid to allow the elections governing body to do their work without fear or favor.
