Persons with disability in Sierra Leone, especially the blind, will soon be proud beneficiaries of a library, where they can read test books and other literatures that will enhance their capacity.

This disclosure was made early this week by the Director of Disability–Sierra Leone (DiSiL) Mr. Teddy Foday-Musa at his Soldier Street office shortly after his return from Australia on a working fund raising visit.

He described his visit as very interesting as he was able to meet with various organizations dealing with disability issues and he presented papers on disability issues in Sierra Leone.

According to Mr. Foday-Musa he was able to secure a partnership with Queens and Braille Writing Association based in Australia, who have kindly consented to work with Disability-Sierra Leone.

He said over five hundred text books and other educational materials and five Braille machines have already been freighted to Sierra Leone for the purpose of establishing a library for blind people. He said the consignment will arrive late in October this year.

He continued that in order to have a just and equitable society in which the right of every citizen including those with disability issues are respected, and therefore they have thought it fit to establish a library for the blind people so that they can be able to read political party manifestos, the constitution of Sierra Leone, and to develop their reading skills.

While in Australia the Director disclosed that disability voice in Sierra Leone is generally a voice that is not heard in discussions of national development and people with disabilities have less access to education, health care and employment.
