World Vision boosts Health Ministry on Cholera fight

Speaking at the handing over ceremony Leslie Scott World Vision Regional Senior Director for West Africa who is currently acting as the National Director said the donation is in fulfillment of their commitment and determination in helping to improve the health care delivery system.

He said “We are making this donation to responds to the Cholera emergency.” Additionally he said World Vision is also working in the areas of health, education, agriculture and social mobilization.

He said after the war, World Vision transformed from relief to long term development through Area Development Programme for a period of fifteen years of intervention to ensure sustainability of community development programmes.

Mr. Leslie Scott said the donation include 350 mobile phones with recharge cards to facilitate the close user group and to enhance communication among stakeholders in a bid to respond to emergencies.

He added they also donated 27 kegs of chlorine for the treatment of water wells in Freetown Bo, Kono Bonthe and Pujehun where they operate and 800,000 units of water purification sachets, assorted drugs for cholera, malaria and malnutrition treatment with cash of Le25 cash for distribution.

He assured that World Vision will continue to support the District Health Medical Teams across the country to fight the cholera epidemic and to also strengthen health facilities.

He added that World Vision United States of America are also planning to make a similar donation through an Air freight which the government should provide a duty weaver to ensure its immediate distribution across the country.

He added that due to seriousness of the cholera situation in the country World Vision has established a National Task force to take updates about the epidemic, facilitate and coordinate the response.

He assured that World Vision will continue to work with the Government of Sierra Leone and partners like WASHNET and Health for All Coalition in ensuring that children are protected.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation the Acting Minister Tamba Bobor Sawyer expressed thanks and appreciation to World Vision for the donation and stated that early this year World Vision intervened to save many live in Pujehun when the cholera outbreak occurred.

He said Cholera cases have reduced as compared to the past as many treatment centers are closing in some parts of Freetown but there are jointly working with the District Health Medical Teams to open new centers in remote parts of the country

He commended world vision for their continued support towards improvement of health care delivery in the country and assured that the donated items will be used for its intended purpose.
