Sierra Leone Anti Corruption Commission is up to it but… thumbnail

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has so far proven that it is well off and it is up to the daunting task of weeding out or at least minimizing the menace that has almost chopped the very fabric of our society. Kudos to Commissioner Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara for being so boisterous in his resolve to combat the devil in corrupt individuals and institutions. We can attest to the fact that the ACC has become a fierce bull dog that can reap off flesh as was demonstrated in the cases of the high and mighty that were once thought to be the untouchables.

The reviewed and invigorating Act of 2008 does not only place premium in the prosecutor powers of the ACC but rather resuscitated the prevention, education and confrontational prowess of the anti graft militants. Apart from the high profiled prosecutions witnessed lately, the ACC has retrieved a whopping Le40-50 Billion of misappropriated public funds which no other commissioner has ever dared to. In fact many people did not realize that the ACC is also mandated to pursue and retrieve stolen wealth and return them to the consolidated fund. The ACC is determined to do even more. The various departments are operating synonymously to attain the much desired effect and at the moment Sierra Leone is experiencing a proactive ACC that enjoys independence in the discharge of its national obligation through public education and outreach.

It is no gainsaying that corruption had been a culture in the country as can be seen in the way of life of the people, but past administration of that institution has always portrayed the ACC as witch hunters wanting to rid the nation of corrupt vices which seemed fuzzy and ambiguous.

The recent strategy that is currently at play and is certainly yielding dividend is the public awareness campaign that has offset the peculiar tendency of commission. Taking the commission to the people is tantamount to success in the overhauling battle for all to be corrupt free. Thankfully the ACC is traversing the length and breath of the country, individuals and institutions, communities and villages, towns and cities mentoring the people about the ills of the virus corruption and how to avoid being corrupt. Surely one can safely say that the ACC is up to the task, but much more needs to be done and if we can achieve this, the support of the people is paramount. So let us all rally behind the commission and maximize zero tolerance on corruption.
