Ambassador Kargbo extends invitation to ACP countries to observe Sierra Leone’s elections thumbnail

Addressing colleague Ambassadors at the headquarters of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries in Brussels during the meeting of the Committee of Ambassadors on Thursday, October 4th, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the organisation has extended an invitation on behalf of the National Electoral Commission to all the 79 nations that comprises the ACP to witness the forthcoming elections in Sierra Leone slated for November 17.

“I would appreciate if colleagues would bring to the attention of their respective governments and affiliate regional groups the invitation by the National Electoral Commission for all well-meaning partners and friends of Sierra Leone to form a part of the Observer Missions of the 2012 Sierra Leone elections”, Dr. Christian Kargbo stated.

He furthered that the elections will be multi-tier which shall include Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Councils, all to be held on the same day.

Ambassador Kargbo informed his colleagues that a total of ten political parties have been approved by the National Electoral Commission to contest the elections and the Nominations of all Aspirants is ongoing.

Assuring the Committee of Ambassadors on the commitment of the government of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma for a peaceful, free and fair elections, Dr Kargbo reiterated that, “preparations are well underway for the overall successful conduct of the 2012 elections as government is aware that the conduct and outcome of the forthcoming elections will be a critical benchmark for assessing the country’s achievements in the consolidation of peace and democracy”.

Outlining some of the mechanisms that have so far been carried out to ensure a transparent electoral exercise, Dr. Kargbo stated that, “a successful completion of the biometric registration of voters throughout the length and breadth of the country, verification of the said registrations and the conclusion of a signed undertaking by all stakeholders in May this year for the conduct of a credible and violence-free process”.

The Ambassador of accompanied to the crucial meeting by the Head of Chancery, Haja Fatmatta Binta Wurie.
