Building Trust in Our Elections

Building Trust in Our Elections thumbnail

Today everybody is talking about the elections which are to be held in November and jostling in their guess of who will emerge victorious. The quest to go to the polls next month is premium but the outcome of the polls is of serious concern, bearing in mind the overzealous nature of politicians, coupled with the vicious tendencies in our youth folks.

How can we achieve a credible election with a result accepted by all is another million dollar question.

The country has degenerated to a point where doubt and aspersion have over-shadowed the institutions and their complimentary authorities that are responsible to ensure all fairness in the process of ensuring peaceful and democratic elections.

Thankfully though, the presence of the European Union Elections Observer Mission (EU EOM) to Sierra Leone can at least save the day. Elections observation is a key component in the EUs policy of promoting human rights, and the support for democracy the world over, and this is not the first time the mission is gracing a credible national election much to the satisfaction of all and sundry.

Head of the current EU Mission in Sierra Leone, Richard Howitt, has assured that his team is undertaking initial meetings with all registered political parties with the hope of building trust in their work.

Howitt observed that the mission will look at all the aspects of the electioneering process to its successful conclusion, and for this reason a team of international experts to expedite the legal, political, gender, human rights, and media aspects of the election with a view of ensuring credible polls.

Certainly, very many other prudent individuals and organizations have also consented to serve as observers in the forthcoming election, all in a bid to foster a credible and acceptable result at the end of polls.

What we should do as development oriented citizens is to co-operate with election authorities so as to ensure a fair process that will generate a credible result that will be accepted by all!
