His Excellency Dr Ernest Bai Koroma told the people of Karina, Biriwa Chiefdom, Bombali District that his visit to the chiefdom was to promote and consolidate peace and tranquility. He noted that farmers must be given space to farm and cattle herders to shepherd their cattle. President Koroma assured the people to personally supervise the outstanding issues that seem to have created division among and between the different tribes in the chiefdom.
The Head of State also promised to address the concerns of the people of Karina and Manjoro with respect to the approval of two schools in the two sections as well as the creation of more jobs for the youth.
President Koroma noted that the people of Sierra Leone deserve a responsive presidency that understands and addresses the felt needs of the people.
He promised to promote the cause of the Mandingo community as the Mandingos “have arrived”, he said. President Ernest Bai Koroma disclosed that Biriwa Chiefdom is the home of his late mum and therefore he was more than anyone else interested in the development of Karina.
“Others are interested in Karina because of political reasons. But I’m interested in Karina because it’s my home… my mother’s home.”
The Chief Executive maintained that when he assumed office in 2007, he realized that almost every aspect of government had some issues to take care of. But he decided to firm up his policies in the “Agenda for Change”, which he believed was the way forward.
According to President Ernest Koroma, yesterday Freetown was the darkest city, but today, electricity has not been delivered everywhere, but it’s far better than yesterday.
In agriculture, the President noted that his government subscribed to the Maputo declaration by increasing budgetary allocations to the agricultural sector more than any other government in the history of Sierra Leone. He also highlighted the many interventions in the sector through the Smallholder Commercialization Programme (SCP) which has now empowered farmers to farm for business rather than subsistence. He also noted the other interventions like the construction of thousands of kilometers of feeder roads to ensure farms are accessible as well as making the markets accessible.
In the area of the Free Health Care, he disclosed that 85% of children or infants who were initially plagued by malnutrition, malaria and other diseases; the Free Health Care he said, has saved lives and made savings for families, especially pregnant women, lactating mothers and under fives.
On education, President Koroma disclosed that the amount of budgetary allocations to the sector, including subventions to the University of Sierra Leone and Njala University, salaries for teachers, lecturers, technical and vocational institutional have increased more than ever before.
Dr Ernest Bai Koroma also noted that there are other matters outside the “Agenda for Change” such as the fight against corruption, creating conducive environment for businesses to thrive, human rights promotion, protection and defence in the country.
“Since 2007″, he said, there has been no political prisoners, no journalist is behind bars for expressing his/her views,” while adding that his government has been rated favourably by even the world financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank, even on the eve of elections.
