Sierra Leone makes improvement on 2012 transparency international CPI thumbnail

Transparency International (TI) a non governmental organization working on corruption at the global level has on the 5th of December 2012 released its Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for this year. The CPI is a composite indicator used to measure perceptions of corruption in the public sector in different countries around the world.

According to the report released this year, Sierra Leone is ranked 123 out of 176 countries that were surveyed in 2012 with a score of 31. This latest ranking indicates that Sierra Leone moved 11 steps upward on the CPI which is a significant improvement when compared to previous years predating the enactment of the Anti Corruption Act 2008. The country is also ranked 26th out of the 48 countries surveyed in Africa, ahead of countries such as Nigeria, Guinea, Cote Devoir, Kenya, Cameroon, and even Russia.

A trend analysis undertaken by the Commission has indicated that Sierra Leone has been making steady progress on the TI Corruption Perception Index within the last 4 years. Between 2008 and 2012, Sierra Leone moved 35 positive steps upwards. This progressive movement on the CPI is indicative of the improvement the country is making in the fight against corruption.

Similar surveys conducted by other anti-graft campaigners such as the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Index, the Global Integrity report, the World Bank Country Performance Report and the Bertelsmann Index amongst others, continues to recognize Sierra Leone favorably on the strides we are taking to deal with corruption and other malfeasance in governance.
