Sunday’s service at Hope International Church and Ministries broke a common rule about first service in a new church. Skeptics and the faithless maintain that a new church will only attract a handful of worshippers. “People will never show up,” Senior Pastor Emmanuel Botchway told the over 200 exciting worshippers that came to grace the first service at Hope International Church and Ministries.
The vision, to plant a church in the community that Sierra Leoneans, Liberians and other nationalities will truly call theirs, however, is the first to break what conventional wisdom will describe as the wait and see rule.
“Thank you for the unexpected,” Pastor Botchway told the congregation. Many members got their first taste of the real message from the young but erudite minister, Emmanuel Botchway. Members of the congregation said they were motivated to listen to him preach and thought it was a blessing for Sierra Leoneans and others who were yearning for a true sense of belonging and ownership.
The church has prepared for opening day with weekly bible class gatherings beginning January, 2010 at the home of Pastor Emmanuel Botchway, and a meeting for the church’s operation on Jan. 3.
It is targeting Christians who attend church, Christians who don’t, and non-Christians alike. He cites several reasons: Nationwide, many people are interested in spirituality, but they have been disenfranchised by local Christian churches. Many of those who attend a church where they do not clearly hear the message of Jesus and the hope that He offers us,” Pastor Botchway said. “At Hope International we will do what we preach and nothing, nothing short of that”
The service was positive, inspiring and timely. The message, “Action Time”, was biblically based, yet relate to the problems of today. All those who came to share this time left with a feeling of hope and optimism, ready to face the coming week, or the challenges of life through the eyes of faith.
