Kailahun Dignitaries Salute President Koroma

Sierra Leone News

As a sequel to the recent signing of the Kenema-Kailahun Highway, a high-level delegation of Members of Parliament from the Kailahun District on Saturday praised President Ernest Bai Koroma for what they described as his commitment to the development to the whole of Sierra Leone as demonstrated in his recent signing of the contract for work to start on the Kenema-Koindu road which will open up the eastern region and effectively connect it to the rest of the country.

Speaking at State House, the Kailahun District Parliamentary Caucus leader, Hon. A.J. Musa, from Pendembu said they were paying a courtesy call on the President to thank him on behalf of their people and to appreciate his personal effort and commitment in addressing the road issue which has always been their greatest challenge.

He noted that even though Kailahun is arguably the breadbasket of Sierra Leone producing not only domestic products but also cash crops, the country has not yet been able to harness up to fifty percent of the district’s potential due to bad road network and apparent impact of the past ten year gruesome war.

The road has always been bad and farmers suffer huge losses as goods perish on the road and they have no option but to trade them in neighboring Guinea and Liberia, he said. The Honorable recognized that the erstwhile SLPP government may have initiated the venture but thanked President Koroma for its implementation and for keeping the project foremost in his mind for we know how many times he has mentioned this before it became a reality on the 29th July 2009. He stated, “We doff our hats to you, Sir.” Another issue the Kailhun MP saluted the President for is the efforts made to resolve the Yenga dispute with neighboring Guinea, calling it a breakthrough for the peace and tranquility of the Kailahun people resident in Yenga.

In his response, President Koroma said there was no need to overemphasize the importance of the road especially for the boosting of agriculture, Kailahun is a top priority and he has asked the Minister of Agriculture to construct a new agricultural office in the area. On Yenga, the President expressed satisfaction on the progress made thus far by the joint technical committee set up to look into the matter and he foresees a peaceful resolution soon. We have been quietly engaged in diplomacy, he noted, before promising to pay a visit to Kailahun.
