SLAJ Monthly symposium kicks off this week

Freetown – The maiden edition of the SLAJ Monthly Symposium takes place at 3:00 PM on Friday 29 January 2010 at the association’s conference hall at 56 Campbell Street in Freetown.

Stephen Whittle, OBE, a retired BBC World Service senior editor and media expert (see brief below) will lead the symposium and will give a talk on Public Service Broadcasting. At present, Sierra Leone is transitioning to become the first country in West Africa to have an independent public service broadcaster, and it is a golden opportunity to hear from someone who has worked at a senior level in the offices of the world’s leading public service broadcaster.

Funded and co-organised by the BBC World Service Trust, the SLAJ Monthly Symposium is part of A National Conversation the BBCWST’s new media and governance initiative which aims to build the journalistic capacity of the Sierra Leone media as well as engender healthy and well-informed debates on key issues of national importance.

International trainers and experts with wide and long years of experience in practical journalism will be made available throughout the course of the project to lecture and hold forum discussions with especially local audiences.

This is a collaborative effort and commitment by SLAJ and the BBC World Service Trust to improve the standard of journalism to its optimum level and hold national discourse expected of a serious national development partner.

Brief bio of Stephen Whittle, OBE

Stephen Whittle has a wide range of experience in broadcasting both in and outside of his native Britain. With about 40 years of experience in broadcasting, he has served as Director at the Broadcasting Standards Commission in the UK and Comptroller of editorial policy at the BBC.

He was the BBC’s most senior editor whose advice and approval was sought by programme makers throughout the corporation’s radio and television networks.

Stephen has an extensive and innovative editorial experience and innovative broadcasting in the UK and abroad. His experience includes involvement in drafting the UK’s Communications Act, writing and applying editorial guidelines for the BBC, and new statutory programme codes for the broadcasting industry. He has also helped develop successful relationships with broadcasters, editors, politicians, Government departments and opinion formers.

Stephen has worked as media expert for the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
