The Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) has contracted the services of the Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation (SLRTA) to train 150 motor mechanics that will serve various purposes in the Ministry.
This was made know by the General Manager of SLRTA Mr. Bockarie Lewis-Kamara last week Friday at his office in Freetown.
Bockarie Lewis-Kamara said the training programme started on the 25th of January 2010 and is expected to last for a month. The General Manager noted that participants were selected from MAFF staff representing various areas of the country, namely Bo, Kenema, Makeni and Kono.
Mr. J.K. Pessima of MAFFs in giving the keynote address during the start of the training explained that the government of Sierra Leone through the Agriculture Ministry is very keen on achieving food self sufficiency in the country and as such would want to empower its staff’s capacity to be able to deliver the food security drive to the extent that the country is able to export food as it did in the 60s and early 70s.
Pessima stated that the government is very much aware of the fact that cutlasses and hoes alone cannot achieve food self sufficiency in the country and as such has taken the tractorization drive which he noted is meant to mechanize the method of farming in the country.
Mr. Pessima lauded government for having taken the drive to acquire most of what could be used, ensuring that the country’s concept of agriculture changes from the crude method of farming to a modern and mechanized one that will definitely enhance the production of food in the country.      Â
