4,000 Lebanese families live in Sierra Leone – says envoy

4,000 Lebanese families live in Sierra Leone – says envoy thumbnail

There are between 30-35 Lebanese families in Bo, and about 4,000 families nationwide.  This was disclosed by the Lebanese Charge D’affairs in Sierra Leone, Mr. Mohamed Baalbaty during a two-day unofficial visit to Bo and Kenema.

In an exclusive interview with SLENA, Mr. Mohamed Baalbaty said this population can constitute a village in Sierra Leone, especially when almost all members of these families were born and bred in Sierra Leone.

The Lebanese community, the Lebanese diplomat recalled, came to this country some hundred years ago and today forms one of the pillars of its economic growth,  but he advised his fellow Lebanese men in the region to engage in other viable agricultural activities in addition to their diamond trade.

He spoke about the establishment of a juice factory by the Lebanese people in Kenema as part of activities aimed at strengthening the bilateral link between the people of Lebanon and Sierra Leone and urged his countrymen to keep up the good work of supporting the people and government of Sierra Leone as this constitutes what he referred to as brotherliness.

He called on the Lebanese in Sierra Leone to remain peaceful and law abiding.

While in Bo, the Lebanese envoy was received and hosted by the former Chairman of the Lebanese community, Southern Region, Alhaji Muhamed Shuman and business tycoon, Alhaji Muhamed Skaikay.
