Sierra Leone News

Sierra Unite, a Sierra Leonean philanthropic organization based in Sydney Australia is an  organization  that  has  been working  hand  in  glove with the  Kanga  schools  project which  is  also based in Australia which over the years has sponsored about 33 schools throughout  Sierra Leone. These two organizations have merged specifically to help build on the capacities of schools in both Freetown and the provinces. (Photo: Mr. Murray Kanneh od Sierra Unite)

But this time round as the door closed on 2009; Sierra Unite made donations to 12 mosques in Freetown alone. The donations which include water kettles and poly-carpets were presented by Mr. Murray Kanneh, the chairman for Sierra Unite in both Australia and Sierra Leone. While making this donation on behalf of Sierra Unite members in Australia, Mr. Kanneh told the recipients that as part of their commitment to promote Islam; this was just part of the goodwill gesture from Sierra Leoneans living in Australia to the Muslim community in Sierra Leone. Thus, in that they are anticipating that beneficiaries will make good use of the donations and at the same time make supplication (duar) on their behalf so that God will give them the strength to do more for the Muslim ‘Umaa’ (community) in Sierra Leone.

The first set of donations was made to the Pademba Road Prison Mosque, and subsequent donations were made to Mende Mosque at Circular Road; Baitul-Hakik Lumley; Masjid Nurujid Rahman also at Regent Road; Masjid Equa-tul-Fi-Islam Lumley Malamah to name but a few. Each Mosque was given one dozen water kettles and a dozen prayer mats in order to make prayer covenant for worshippers. At the final presentation of these gifts at the Majid Equatal-Fi-Islam at Black Tank Mosque Lumley, Mr. Francis Bockarie made a general appeal to the Muslim community (Umaa) in the world to continue to make such support especially to impoverished countries like Sierra Leone. He thanked the Sierra Unite team in abundance for making such a marvelous goodwill gesture in boosting Islam in Sierra Leone.
