Speaker of Parliament Hon. Justice Abel Stronge led Sierra Leone’s delegation to the two-day African Regional Preparatory Meeting on the Review of the Implementation of the Brussels Programme of Action (BPoA) which commenced on Monday at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The delegation also included the Deputy Director of the Development Assistance Coordinating Office (DACO) in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Mrs. Abie Kamara and the Clerk to the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Foreign Affairs and Youth and Sports, Mr. Mohamed Koroma.

The overarching goal of the Programme of Action is for Least Developed Countries (LCDs) to make substantial progress towards halving the proportion of people living in extreme poverty and suffering from hunger by 2015 and promote the sustainable development of LCDs.

The confab which is attended by over 150 participants from across the world was jointly organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States and the United Nations Development Programme.

The African Regional Preparatory Meeting is a follow up session to the fourth United Nations Conference for LCDs holding in Istanbul, Turkey in 2011; thus the outcome of this review process will form one of the outputs to the august gathering in Istanbul.

The Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Addis Ababa was represented at the meeting by His Excellency Mr. Andrew Bangali, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and his deputy Mr. Amadu Koroma while the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations Focal Point Person for LCDs based in Rome, Mr. Suffyan Koroma, also attended the event.

Meanwhile, on Monday Ambassador Bangali and his deputy also attended the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) Meeting at the Headquarters of the African Union Commission where the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada and the Canadian Prime Minister’s Personal Representative to the G-8 and G-20 Summits, His Excellency Mr. Leonard Edwards briefed the Committee on very salient issues including the post Copenhagen Climate Change forum, how Africa will add its voice in the discussions of the G-20 and the preparations which are afoot ahead of the forthcoming G-20 Summit.
