Public Strike Wrecks Guinea

Neighboring Guinea has been shattered with a 2-day national strike declared by trade unions in Guinea against Dadis Camara led junta.

The Trade Union leaders declared the 2-day strike according to reports to mourn the death of the almost two hundred unarmed civilians that were brutally murdered by the junta regime in the protest rally that called on the junta leader not to take part in the forthcoming presidential elections.

During the protest, on September 28 2009, more than 158, more still dying in hospitals, were reportedly gunned down by the military an attempt which has been attributed to the move by the military regime to clamp down on opposition activists wanting to see the back of the present military regime.

It is however reported that that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), intends to settle the impasse in calling on all sides involved in the matter to embrace peace whilst negotiations are underway to ensure that the grievances are amicably settled.

Reports from Guinea say the strike takes effect in both the public and private sector and that people are being asked to stay home, down tools and leave work and all other engagements and offer prayers for those killed during the demonstration.

Reports also say youths in the country are calling for a five day hunger strike that is geared towards brokering an agreement in the country, while showing their discontent over the incident.

Meanwhile, reports from Conakry reveal a dispute has broken out between soldiers at Dadis Camara’s Alpha Yayah Military Camp headquarters after deputy junta leader General Sekouba Konate ordered police to arrest Dadis Camara’s aide-de-camp Aboubacar Sidiki “Toumba” Diakite for his part in the mass killings of anti-government protesters last month.

Heavy gunfire is said to have erupted during a heated conversation in the military barracks. No arrest was made.
