Attitudinal Change

The Presidential initiative for the change of attitude and behaviour is right but it needs practical approach if it is to be realised. No Government can succeed in the fight for attitudinal and behavioural change in this country if the tenets of moral discipline and virtues are not considered prominent in the dispensation of our civic responsibilities. Our focus for change in this regard is the young folk who are the succeeding generation. (Read more ...)

We Must Praise the Police

As an editorial policy we are none aligned. We only answer to the people of this country. For this reason we give praise where it is due and condemnation to whosoever deserve it. We favor no one and we fear no one. When therefore we see the security situation improving in the country, especially in the capital Freetown, we feel compelled to shower praise on the Sierra Leone Police for maintaining such quiet and calm. What are we Celebrating?

The word “Independent,” according to a perfect dictionary companion, the Merriam Webster Thesaurus is the ability to take care of oneself without outside help.
In other words independent means self-sufficient. Going by the above definition and taking a thorough look at the Sierra Leonean perspective, independence is submerged to the Oxford’s one layer of definition of independence as meaning self governing or unwilling to be under an obligation to others (Read more ...)

We Must Protect Our Environmentoilpalmtree.jpg

The National Human Development Report Card on Sierra Leone touched on a very critical area that has the potential to threaten the peace and stability of our country, that area is how human beings are destroying the eco system. The world is experiencing a robust change in climatic conditions. Global warming and gas emissions according to environmental experts are threatening a peaceful environment.

In Sierra Leone massive deforestation, land degradation and depleting substances and green house emissions are so prevalent that if urgent steps are not taken to contain the situation, we may encounter environmental disaster in the future. (Read more ...)

Connaught Hospital – A Disgrace to the Health Delivery System of this Nation

The detailed report by Premier News about the appalling conditions at the Connaught Hospital is a disgrace to the health delivery system of Sierra Leone.  ConnaughtHospital.JPG

That there is no water supply and electricity in the main referral health center in the country is pathetic to say the least.

We are even aware that this is the situation in almost all government hospitals right across the country. We have always maintained that the public health delivery system is in its lowest ebb.

Remunerations for health workers are so paltry that they are going out of the country en-masse to seek greener pastures.

We realize that the new Government has inherited a rotten system, but if we are to reiterate President Koroma’s pledge of fighting poverty and raising the standard of living of ordinary Sierra Leoneans, then good health care and electricity should be the priorities of his Government.

Sierra Leone still has one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world and we fear that if we continue on this downward trend, then the attainment of the human development goals will be a far-fetched dream.

The fact that there is no equipment or adequate drugs to administer treatment to patients in hospitals is too scary.

For doctors and nurses to treat patients with levity and neglect is unprofessional and unethical.  We understand they are going through a lot of constraints but they should demonstrate care and sympathy for patients, which we know is part of their training.

We are therefore calling on the authorities to handle the situation with the seriousness it deserves.
