UMC Donates to Taiama School
A project called Operation
Classroom has made the students of Taiama Secondary School become proud beneficiaries of learning materials from United Methodist
Church (UMC) mission in Sierra Leone. The learning materials which were officially handed over by the Education Secretary
of the mission, Mr. Saffa Koroma, to the principal of the school, Mr. Sylvanus Williams, received warm welcome and gratitude.
The Education
Secretary explained that, Taiama Secondary School, until the coming of the present principal, Mr. Sylvanus Williams was not
able to put a library in place for the students. Mr. Koroma, an educationist and former principal of the Kenema Government
Secondary School said that he knows the daunting tax that is involved in running a school as he has experienced it before.
He however
commended the principal, Mr. Sylvanus Williams, for the cordial relationship he has created between the community and the
school. He called on the staff and pupils to make good use of the materials that have been put at their disposal. The materials
supplied are mainly stationeries such as Arts & Science text books, Holy Bibles, etc. He encouraged staff and pupils of
the school to work hard as the principal is a determined administrator that is ready to bring quality education to the pupils
of the school. He at the same time warned that people should desist from levying unnecessary charges on pupils. He said that
such acts are orchestrated by some people that opposed the splendid work of the Principal. He said that such acts are against
the norms and policies of the mission and it is meant to damage the climate of trust that has been accorded to the principal.
Parents
however responded in that vain that it is an issue that has been given them; the parents, a very tough time. The parents appeal
that; this kind of act should be put under control. The principal, Sylvanus Williams responding said that he has been working
towards that and promised to put a total halt to it. He promised that he is going to put a very responsible staff together.
He maintained that he is determined and prepared to strategize plans to bring quality education to the school. He re-affirmed
his commitment to the school and the nation. He talked on the unpleasant relationship between teachers which he has resolved
and has put to a final rest.
The principal said that he left Port Loko Teacher’s College because he
wants to serve his people in Taiama. He however concluded that the learning materials will be used judiciously and that as
he stands development has been part of him for a very long period of time now. He informed the gathering about the successes
he has made since he took over as principal. He said that he has improved sports education, infrastructures and has instilled
discipline in the school which he thinks will give a national and standard essence to the school.
He then
appealed to parents to be supportive of the school by paying tuition fees regularly.
Mr. Williams
concluded by commending the staff conducting the syndicate classes which have kept pupils very busy and improved.
