Thanks and Prize Giving Services at Providence Preparatory School

The Providence Preparatory and Lumley High Schools have observed their Thanks and Prize Giving Service last Sunday at the Faith UBC Church, Regent Road Lumley. The theme of the Thanks and Prize Giving was "Show others the goodness of God" cited from 1st Peters 2:9 in the Holy Bible.

The preacher of the occasion was the head of UBC Mission Sierra Leone Conference, Rev. Billy K. Simbo. In his sermon on the theme, Reverend Simbo explained the reason children should be cared for by their parents. He cited an example in the Bible, when a woman of two children that were troublesome in school went to see a new pastor to bless them. The disciples stopped the woman form seeing Jesus Christ. Later, the woman and her children were accepted to see Jesus and He prayed for them. The Reverend encouraged parents to take good care of their children and use what he called the ABC pattern:  (
A) We should not leave our children behind, (B) We should love our children at all times, (C) We learn from our children.

He further said that if an adult is willing to lead the children he/she should put off childish attitudes but maintain a childlike attitude.

The history of the schools was given by Rev. John Sesay who also is the manager of the schools. He narrated that it all started in 1979 with the support of the late Pa Bull, Mama Yealie Sesay and a host of others. Rev. John Sesay went on to explain that the name of the preparatory school, Providence, was given by Mrs. Daisy Bona who also is one of the Grand Chief patrons of the ceremony.

Since the inception of these schools students at both the preparatory and the secondary school are making good marks on external exams with a total of 130 students at that moment. In 2002, the secondary school was established after a series of stumbling blocks but because of the people that love education in their community the school went on. Parents and guardians were all present at the service. Prizes were also given to teachers for their dedication, determination and dynamism in educating. Vote of thanks was moved by Winifred Sefoi of JSS1 Lumley High School. The prizes were distributed by Mrs. Daisy Bona, and Rev. Joseph Sesay.

Highlights of the occasion were climaxed with the schools brass band which took a procession march through the principal streets in the Lumley Community.
